Taekwondo

One of the most intriguing, enjoyable, exciting and popular sporting martial arts events in the world today is taekwondo. In fact, it was voted the world’s most popular martial arts sport of the year in 1989. Taekwondo officially became an Olympic event in the year 2000 and has been since that time. This sport is native to Korea and the name was driven from Korean language.

What Is Taekwondo?

Pronounced as “Tae” “kwon” “do” in English spelling, this martial arts sport involves combat and self-defence techniques used in combination with sport and exercise. Although it is one word in Korean, the meaning of taekwondo can better be understood by considering the three English spelling syllables. The Korean words “Tae” means “step-on”, “leg”, or “foot, “Kwon” means “fight or fist” and “Do” mean “discipline” or “way”.

These words can give you a clear picture on the basic aspects of taekwondo. Thus, when considered together, taekwondo could mean controlled or disciplined use of feet or legs and fists to fight or to defend one’s-self. It encompasses the right use of fists and feet in order to promote peaceful co-existence among the people of the word.

For Whom Is Taekwondo?

It sounds Korean and most people think that only Korean ethnics can perform taekwondo. This assertion is wrong as anybody whether young or old, male or female, black or white can learn and be a force to reckon with. In fact, some of the most popular and successful martial arts sportsmen are not native to Korea.

People who excel in taekwondo start when they are still kids. When you start taking taekwondo classes as a child, your body is in a position to adapt well to the exercises that are performed and well as the other skills needed. This does not mean that older people cannot join this sport. It depends on your enthusiasm, commitment as well as willingness to achieve.
